Planning a wedding can feel overwhelming when you’re staring at an endless to-do list with no clear starting point. Breaking everything down into a manageable timeline will save your sanity and help you actually enjoy your engagement.

1. 12+ Months Before: Lock in the Big Stuff

Start with your venue and date — everything else flows from these two decisions. Popular venues book up fast, especially for Saturday weddings in peak season, so don’t wait around thinking you have plenty of time. Once you’ve secured your location, book your photographer and caterer since the best ones get snatched up quickly too.

2. 6-8 Months Before: Handle the Details People Will Notice

Send out those save-the-dates and start dress shopping. Trust me, alterations take longer than you think, and you don’t want to be stressed about fit two weeks before your wedding. This is also when I recommend booking your DJ or band, finalizing your menu, and ordering invitations. Florists should be on your list now too, especially if you’re getting married during prom season or major holidays when flowers are in high demand.

3. 3-4 Months Before: Get Personal

Mail your invitations and start thinking about the ceremony itself. Write your vows, choose readings, and finalize the music.

4. 1-2 Months Before: Final Countdown Mode

Confirm headcounts with your caterer and finalize seating charts — this part always takes longer than expected because someone inevitably has drama with someone else. Schedule your final dress fitting, confirm all vendor details, and create a detailed timeline for your wedding day. Don’t forget to delegate responsibilities to your wedding party and family members so you’re not trying to manage everything yourself on the big day.

5. Week of Wedding: Breathe and Trust the Process

Rehearse, relax, and remember that small hiccups won’t ruin your day. Pack an emergency kit with safety pins, stain remover, and snacks.
